Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America: Sixth Annual Symposium for Patients and their Families

On September 29, 2013, Dr. Joel Bauer spoke at the CCFA Patient Education Symposium in New York City about Surgical Advances for patients with IBD. He presented to an audience of 100 patients and healthcare providers on new surgical options for patients with Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s Disease. The presentation, entitled “Surgery and IBD: What to Know Before and What to Expect After”, focused on providing a checklist of questions IBD patients should be able to get answered by their surgeons before and after surgery.

Dr. Bauer has pioneered several surgical techniques employed in the management of patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease. These include Restorative Proctocolectomy and J pouch Ileo-anal Anastomosis. He presented data on minimally invasive techniques used to perform this operation and data on one stage restoration proctocolectomy (without ileostomy) in over 400 patients. Informing patients about the available surgical options for these chronic diseases helps them to take an active role in their care to improve their quality of life.
