In July 2013, Dr. Popowich joined our team at Manhattan Surgical Associates. He is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Dr. Popowich has cutting-edge training and expertise in the fields of inflammatory bowel disease, colon and rectal cancer, laparoscopic colorectal surgery, single incision laparoscopic surgery, transanal endoscopic microsurgery, and sphincter preserving surgery.

He also has experience in the management of benign anorectal disease and extensive experience in the surgical management of constipation and fecal incontinence, including sacral nerve stimulation. Paralleled with Dr. Popowich’s clinical interests, he is active in many research projects evaluating the medical and surgical management of inflammatory bowel disease, colon and rectal cancer and quality improvement.


Dr. Popowich graduated with honors from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia in 1999. At Emory, he was elected into the Phi Beta Kappa honor society at the end of his sophomore year.

Dr. Popowich attended medical school at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from 1999-2003 where he graduated cum laude. He then completed his general surgery residency at Northwestern University in 2010. In addition to clinical training during his residency, he completed a grant funded research fellowship at Northwestern Memorial Hospital from 2006-2008.

He came to The Mount Sinai Hospital for his colon and rectal surgery residency, which he completed in 2011. For two years Dr. Popowich was a practicing colorectal and general surgeon at Tufts Medical Center in Boston.

During Dr. Popowich’s training and practice he has received several research awards at various national meetings as well as awards at Northwestern, including:‚Äč

  • The Knavel Surgical Scholar Award
  • The Edelstone-Bendix Research Award
  • The CARE award twice during his residency

At the conclusion of his residency, he was the only finalist amongst the surgical house staff for the Dr. Susan Perlman Award which is given for not only academic excellence, but also special leadership skills and compassion for patients.


Dr. Popowich has published over 15 peer-reviewed manuscripts and two book chapters on various topics including colon and rectal cancer and inflammatory bowel diseases. Dr. Popowich has presented his research at numerous regional, national, and international meetings.

Recently one of Dr. Popowich’s residents presented a collaborative project at the 2013 New England Chapter of Colorectal Surgery society meeting and won first prize in the open research competition.

Dr. Popowich is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a Fellow of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, and the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America. He is an active member of the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT). Regionally he is a member of the New England and New York chapters of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons.
