Dr. Stephen Gorfine has been a member of our team at Manhattan Surgical Associates since 1987. During his career, Dr. Gorfine has become recognized as one of the premier coloproctologists in the world. He was instrumental in the development of nitric oxide donors in the non-operative treatment of anal fissures. Dr Gorfine has extensive experience in the surgical management of benign and malignant anorectal disease. His areas of expertise include treatment of complex anal fistulas, hemorrhoidal disease and anal fissures. He is one of the only regional surgeons to employ Bascom’s techniques for treatment of pilonidal disease. He has extensive experience in the surgical management of constipation and fecal incontinence, including sacral nerve stimulation. Dr Gorfine treats anal and rectal cancers with sphincter preservation whenever possible. Dr. Gorfine is active in many research projects including the medical and surgical management of inflammatory bowel disease, colon, rectal and anal cancer, diverticulitis, abdominal wall hernias, and benign anal conditions.

Currently, Dr Gorfine is a Professor of Surgery in the Department of Surgery in the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Dr. Gorfine is a former President of the New York Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. He has served on numerous committees of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and the American College of Physicians. He is a member of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America and currently serves on the regional medical board.

In recognition of his clinical accomplishments, Dr. Gorfine has also been honored with the following:

Dr. Gorfine attended Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, graduating in 1971. He received his Medical Degree from the University of Massachusetts, Worcester in 1978.

Upon completion of medical school, he began a residency in Internal Medicine at the Mount Sinai Medical Center. He completed his internal medicine residency in 1981 and promptly began a residency in general surgery also at Mount Sinai . In May, 1985, after completing his chief residency in surgery, Dr. Gorfine received the Arthur H Aufses, Sr Prize in Surgery from the Department of Surgery at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. In 1986, he became a resident in Colon and Rectal Surgery at the Ferguson Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He completed his training in 1987 and returned to New York City where he joined Manhattan Surgical Associates.


Dr. Gorfine has published more than 30 peer-reviewed manuscripts and 15 book chapters covering various topics including Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, benign anal disease, and colon and rectal cancer. In addition, he has presented his research at multiple national and international medical conferences and has been invited to speak at both national and international medical meetings.

Dr. Gorfine is one of only a handful of American physicians that are board certified in three specialties. He is a fellow of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, the New York Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons, and the American College of Physicians. He is a peer reviewer for the journals Diseases of the Colon and Rectum and The New England Journal of Medicine.
